Paramount Pictures still remains to have a studio in Hollywood. The first film studio was called the Nestor Film Company and was established in 1911. Over the years of growth with the film industry Hollywood began to be known as Tinseltown and dream factory for its shining image. Aside from the studios that made Hollywood shine, it is also home to many attractions.
One prestigious attraction is the Dolby Theatre. This theatre is home to the Oscars. Other great attractions that are noteworthy in Hollywood include The Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, The Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hotel Roosevelt, Hollywood Museum, Crossroads of the World, and many more.
In the Hollywood Hills lies the famous Hollywood sign. Originally the Hollywood sign read “Hollywoodland” when it was originally made in 1923. It was originally made to help with real estate and housing development. In 1949 it was petitioned to have the “land” removed from the sign so it could refer to the district and not the development of housing.
Since the sign was made it has had numerous makeovers and facelifts. It stands boldly as the communities reminder and barometer. In 1994 there were 11 other cities named Hollywood that attempted to get a trademark for it. The attempt failed and continued the shine of Hollywood, California.
Hollywood hosts several special events annually throughout the year. These events include the Academy Awards which are annually in February/March, The Oscars, Hollywood Christmas Parade, and the Hollywood Half Marathon. The Marathon is annually and helps to raise awareness and funds for local homeless shelters for the youth.
Since Hollywood is in the city limits of Los Angeles it does not have its own municipal government, meaning no elected officials. An honorary Mayor of Hollywood was appointed for ceremonial purposes from 1980 to 2008 but no further action has been made for it since.
