Koreatown, Los Angeles, CA
Koreatown is located west 3 miles from downtown Los Angeles, southeast of Hollywood by 4 miles and is east of Santa Monica beach by 12 miles. Koreatown started in the early 1900’s when Koreans started staying around downtown Los Angeles. This housing situation was because of racial segregation laws. It has broadened over the years as more people started settling there of various races. Koreatown is very diverse ethnically wise. This neighborhood is one of the most crowded neighborhoods in the United States. As of 2000 there were a total of 115,070 residents.
There are several significant places in Koreatown that are enjoyable and outstanding to visit. These notable places include Bimini Baths, The Korean American National Museum, Koreatown Plaza, Liberty Park, The Korean Cultural Center, Chapman Park Market and The Wiltern Theater. To get around to these various attractions there are two subway lines that run through Koreatown making commutes easier. There are also local, express and rapid bus lines that venture through the area for commuters as well.
Koreatown is known for its exciting festivals. Annually they hold a Korean festival and parade. This takes place on Olympic Boulevard and proceeds to Seoul Peace Park. An annual Car free and Earth Day festival also takes place and is presented by The Wilshire Center Business Improvement District.
To serve Koreatown and protect there are four fire departments available to help. Police Service is also available. The Los Angeles Police Department provides services by utilizing the Olympic Division. The city of Los Angeles designates a council in the area to help with citizens concerns. The council is known as Koreatown Neighborhood Council.
Another important factor about Koreatown is the education aspect. There are 19 schools within the Koreatown border to help those who strive for knowledge continue education. There is also a Korean Education Center that is associated with the government within these borders as well. For thriving minds the Pio Pico Koreatown Branch Library is the local library for Koreatown. Also check out the sprawling Burbank area.
